International Moot Court Board

International Moot Court is a litigation-oriented organization dedicated to providing a forum in which students can develop the skills necessary to research and argue issues concerning a matter of public international law.

The International Moot Court Board helps prepare, organize and facilitate student participation in two major internationally recognized competitions every year: The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition and the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vienna Arbitration Competition).

The Jessup International Moot Court Competition:

An annual competition, established in 1959, includes students from all over the world with over 500 teams from approximately 90 nations. Focusing on a different topic of international law every year, it allows students to research and prepare memorials in relevant topics of international law. There are regional competitions and national competitions throughout the fall and winter. The International Finals are held in the Spring in Washington D.C.

For more information on the competition itself, visit their website:

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot

An annual competition that focuses on international commercial law and arbitration, it allows our team members to solve international business disputes using methods of alternative dispute resolution. The preliminary work is completed in the United States and the final competition occurs in Vienna in the Spring Semester.

For more information on the competition itself, visit their website: http://www.cisg.law.pace.edu/vis.html

For the 2006 – 2007 year the Board is exploring additional competitions to allow Members to become familiar with specialized areas of international law. These competitions will be listed as approved and entered by the Board.

Memberships:

International Moot Court is open to second and third-year students. During the fall semester, the members research a given topic on international affairs, prepare a legal brief and present their argument to a panel of judges. These judges select a team to represent the School of Law in regional and national competitions during the spring semester. Students may also apply for membership without taking the Moot Court Workshop. Contact one of the Executive Board members for more information.
The International Moot Court Board is in the process of evolving its bylaws to extend membership to other students as well. More information will be available soon.
