Miami Law Women is an organization for students with similar beliefs and goals regarding the advancement of women both in the legal profession and throughout society. We are an organization devoted to community service, networking with attorneys and organizations, and social programming within the law school as well as throughout our community.
Last year, we started a Women's Mentoring Program, connecting MLW members with women who graduated from the law school. With the help of the Office of Law Alumni & Development, we received overwhelming support for this program. This year, we are reaching out to alumni beyond South Florida, in hopes of expanding our mentoring options to include women located throughout the country. To participate as a mentor, alumni can apply online by following this link: http://www.law.miami.edu/alumni/06_woman_call_for_mentors.html.
Working together with our faculty advisor, Professor Mary Coombs, and other accomplished professors and administrators at the law school, we facilitate and encourage student-faculty interaction beyond the classroom. Last fall, MLW hosted a "Women in the Law" reception honoring the law school's esteemed female faculty and devoted administration. We are working toward making this an annual event.
Although networking events are a major part of MLW's success, we are also dedicated to serving the community through various service projects. We are particularly devoted to two organizations: Susan G. Komen for the Cure ( http://cms.komen.org/komen/index.htm) and Be Bright Pink (http://bebrightpink.com/). Annually, we participate in The Race for the Cure and we take a keen interest in organizations devoted to breast cancer research and awareness. Aside from these organizations, we are frequent volunteers at the Good Hope Equestrian Training Center ( http://www.goodhopeequestriancenter.com/). At Good Hope, we assist in activities that offer disabled children opportunities to increase their independence and quality of life all through equestrian training. Finally, we host an annual clothing drive for battered women shelters and we are involved with other student organizations' community service projects as well.
Miami Law Women is a forever evolving student group. We encourage new projects and want to be a resource for our student body. We firmly believe that although a law student's time is precious, volunteering or attending a student-faculty soiree is certainly worth the momentary distraction. Getting involved in a student organization is one way to maintain that "balance" we all so eagerly strive to achieve.
