The University of Miami Law Student Organization;for Human Rights was created to promote interest in human rights on campus and in the greater Miami;by raising;awareness of human rights concerns;through film series events, speaker events,;alternative break trips,;and;service projects. UMLAWSOHR seeks to establish a forum for education, advocacy and outreach related to human rights and social justice. |

Human Rights: Alternative Spring Break to Dominican Republic
From March 11-16 UM law student members of the Student Organization for Human Rights will be traveling to the Dominican Republic to establish connections with Haitian human rights leaders working in the bateyes (sugar cane plantation barracks;housing Haitian laborers) and to;create a photo documentary;extending the scope of;SOHR's research to address labor conditions of Haitian workers in the DR, their immigration status, as well as their access to medical services.; Specifically, we will be traveling to San Pedro de Macoris to visit the second biggest and most criticized sugar cane plantation in the DR, el Consorcio de Vicini. Upon return to the United States, we intend to share our findings with the broader community, spreading awareness about the living conditions of our Haitian neighbors.
